FluxHome is Ready for Send-Off

September 18, 2013

Following months of planning and construction, the USC student-designed entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon is finally ready to join the competition.

The 960-square-foot single family, net-zero home — called fluxHome to reflect its flexible, modular design — has been under construction since April on the South Lawn behind Watt Hall.

Trojans are invited to view the completed fluxHome during a campus send-off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 18.

The USC School of Architecture is the main sponsor of the project, and Dean Qingyun Ma will speak at the event, along with student members of the interdisciplinary planning and construction team. Following the speeches, team members will give tours of the home.

View the project’s latest video, taken when fluxHome was nearly finished, that explains some of the dwelling’s unique features, such as its smart home control and entertainment center and its solar chimney with a motorized roller shade that can be controlled from a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Project faculty co-directors Alice Kimm and Gary Paige of the School of Architecture devoted an extensive amount of time the past year and a half shepherding fluxHome from studio concepts to a finished home.

It’s now ready to be dismantled in three sections and trucked to the international Solar Decathlon competition at the Great Park in Irvine, Calif., to be held Oct. 3-13. There, it will be judged against homes built by 19 other teams from universities around the world. During the judging period, the public is invited to tour all 20 homes.

After the competition, fluxHome will return to the USC campus to be used as an educational tool on environmentally sensitive housing. Eventually it will be donated to a local family, which will require dismantling and rebuilding in the University Park neighborhood.
